Meet the Team

Genevieve Pontillas

HIA Co-Founder/Director

Hello and welcome!  My name is Genevieve and I am a co-founder of HIA. Help in Action was created out of a desire to make a difference in the world and to encourage others to do the same through volunteering.  Since I was young, my aspiration was simple-- to help others.  This has led me to a wonderful career in healthcare and performance improvement.  Over time, I felt a deep desire to actively pursue opportunities to improve our world. I learned my beautiful friend and co-founder, Daisy, felt the same way, and that’s how HIA was born!

I have a Master of Health Administration (MHA) from the University of Southern California (USC), am a lean six sigma black belt, and am currently a Manager of Performance Improvement and Consulting for Kaiser Permanente. My professional area of focus is to empower teams to work together to find ways to continuously improve and provide excellent patient care.

I have three children and reside in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I love to travel, volunteer, and live a healthy and active lifestyle. My passion and purpose is in serving others and hope that it inspires others to be the change they want to see in the world.  My favorite quote is, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” – Mother Teresa

Daisy Mia Ureño

HIA Co-Founder/Director

My name is Daisy Mia Ureño, co-founder of HIA, and I am deeply passionate about life and everything that involves serving others! Life’s paths have taken me through many challenges in an accelerated amount of time, and through those moments of uncertainly is that I began to volunteer in search of meaning and purpose. Not surprisingly, though volunteering is where I found exactly those two things. It soon became very clear in my heart that serving others was my calling and my dream is to continue to love and serve others in everything I do. In fact, I believe we all share one universal calling which is to love one another and serve each other in every way we can. Help in Action started small, by a deep desire shared by two friends to serve those around us by volunteering and inspiring others to take action and be the change they want to see in the world today. We truly believe that it only takes action for a difference to be made.

I have an AA Degree in Psychology, a Bachelor’s of Science in Human Services & Mental Health, and a Masters of Arts in Organizational Leadership. I am a Human Resources professional, Certified Life Coach, and previous Chair of the advisory board for Food on Foot, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting the homeless in Los Angeles, CA.

I absolutely love to travel, read, work out, and of course, volunteer! I love my family and I love to spend time with my 11 nieces and nephews who are my entire world. I am originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, lived in Southern California for 12 years, and currently live in Mexico City. I am excited and I look forward to everything HIA will be able to do to help those in most need and improve the world one good deed at a time.

Bianca Ureño

HIA Leader

Hi my name is Bianca. A little bit about myself: I graduated from Sacramento State with a Bachelor’s in Interior Architecture. On weekends, you can find me enjoying some time in the sun with my fur babies, Zakumi and Mocha, or at a coffee shop enjoying a latte.

I am honored to be a team member of HIA.  I joined HIA after being offered an opportunity to travel to Mexico and experience first hand some of the living conditions of our brothers and sisters.  In a world full of social media and technology, it is easy to lose ourselves in our perfect “bubble.”  I realized that day that I seemed to be living in a very superficial world. I have found that helping those in need has brought a different meaning to my life and a new purpose.

Vanessa Ureño

HIA Leader

Welcome and thank you for taking the time to learn about HIA!

My name is Vanessa and I recently graduated  with my Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering. I work as an Engineering Project Coordinator at a Staffing Firm.  My hobbies (when time permits) include hiking, baking, and handmade crafts such as sewing, knitting, etc.  Fun fact about me, I joined my company’s mask making event during the beginning of Quarantine and donated homemade masks to offices with a short supply!

In high school, I started volunteering for various events and found it to be both enjoyable and rewarding. The simple thought of making a positive impact on even a single person’s life, is a feeling that is hard to put into words but completely worth pursuing!

My first volunteering event with HIA was a day trip with the organization Baja Bound - this was the event that reignited my love for giving and serving others. By becoming an active team leader of HIA I hope to not only continue to grow my passion of helping those in need, but also to help give others the tools they need to ignite their passion as well!

Cynthia Perez

HIA Leader / Website Manager

Hello! My name is Cynthia Perez and I am a member of this wonderful organization, Help in Action. I graduated from California State University, East Bay with a major in Cell & Molecular Biology and a minor in Chemistry initially pursuing Optometry as a career. With a few career detours and a change of course along the way, my main goal never changed: I wanted to help others. Whether that was in the medical field, in the education field, or even in the tech industry - I worked hard to find my niche in this great big world. In 2018 I took a great opportunity to work for an incredible company whose mission aligned with mine - to be a service to the world and make our products universally accessible and useful to everyone.  I began my career at Google working in People Operations, moved on to Customer Programs, and finally landed on the Search team supporting awesome VPs and working cross-functionally on org-wide planning and events.

I’m married to my wonderful husband, Danny Perez. In our free time you can find us wandering to the most beautiful parks and beaches in California, spending time with our family, and watching our favorite shows Friends & The Office!

I joined HIA September 2020 with the hope to continue to fulfill my calling of helping those in most need. HIA’s vision of embracing the gift of giving and serving those in need could not be more aligned with what I strive to do in my own life. As Anne Frank beautifully said it, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”
